MORE learner drivers are needed to get behind the wheel at the Mackay showgrounds this Wednesday for a unique opportunity to earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The world record attempt involves 11 centres in Australia running half-hour driving lessons at the same time, and also gives learner drivers the chance to hone their motoring skills.

At least 25 Mackay learners, with their parents or driving instructors, are needed to take part in the world record attempt.

Mackay co-ordinator of the World’s Largest Driving Lesson, Graeme Ransley, said learners of all ages were invited to participate; however, they had to arrive at the showgrounds by 7.30am.

“The event raises awareness of road safety and emphasises the need for learners to learn how to drive correctly,” Mr Ransley said.

“The whole time, including the lesson planning, can be logged into their (learner) log books.”

Mr Ransley said State Emergency Service (SES) personnel would set up the driving course, which would include a distraction to test participants’ driver awareness.

He said the event would give learner drivers the chance not only to earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records but also to learn some valuable driving skills.

Before the World’s Largest Driving Lesson officially gets under way, instructors assist students to complete a pre-drive check, which involves examining mirrors, seat position and making sure they are buckled in properly, the handbrake is on and their mobile phones switched off.

The lesson officially begins when a horn is blown and half and hour later, it’s hoped, a world record will be achieved.

If you are a learner driver and want to be involved, register on the day or beforehand by visiting http://www.fatalityfreefriday.com/about/events/2010/biggestdrivinglesson/index.html.
